Caught in Another Car Parade - More Cool Stuff to Do in Phoenix

The last two weeks have been a whirlwind of activities for our family. It seems like every year, we have all these plans to get to some of the great local events that are happening in Phoenix during the beautiful spring weather. But, we have so many family birthday parties and kids parties and events that we are booked up almost every weekend.

Last week, we did attend a local event as a family on accident. On our way home from the Macayo's on Central where we'd attended the third party of the weekend, this one a family member's, my daughters noticed classic cars passing us on the road. My 2 year old kept shouting, "Look, Mom!!! Old fashioned cars!!!" We realized there was a classic car event going on as car after car cruised past us.

Dad would have loved this one!
I know it's not very organic of this mama to love old fashioned, gas-guzzling cars, but it's in my blood. My car-loving dad was born in 1929 and he could recite a list of every car he'd ever driven - along with all the options like the white walled tires, interior and exterior colors, leather/cloth, engine type and horsepower. He knew when car models changed style and what had been changed. He and his brother memorized these kinds of things as a game when they were kids and he never lost his love for it. So, my girls are used to me shouting out - "Woohoo!! Look at that car!" when we see something older than 40 years go by us.

It's no surprise then that when we saw all these beauts passing by us, we turned the car around and followed them. It reminded me of the time I got caught in another kind of motor procession - though this one was not for a serious occasion. As we traveled, we got caught up in the excitement of the moment and exclaimed at all the colors and models we liked best as well as the thousands of people lining central. People cheered and aahhhed as the cars went past. In fact, we got so caught up, we failed to realize we were one of the few modern cars on the road. Haha!! The car aficionados got a real treat as we cruised next to a James Bond car in our 2000 Toyota Camry with two little girls practicing their princess wave out the windows!

Just one more cool thing available in Phoenix if you're looking for an activity. When I googled to find the event, I found quite a few classic car shows going on in the next few months. So, if you missed it, just look around, you'll find another.

I think this black and red one is just my style!

I know my dad would have had fun with us this weekend. Who knows, maybe he was calling out the car models with us as we drove!

MIM - Phoenix's Musical Instrument Museum

A few weeks ago, friends invited us to the MIM. We have been wanting to visit for a while, so we were excited as we packed up our four and two-year-old girls and met our friends and their two-year-old. If you love music and you're looking for cool ways to while away the time as the weather heats up, this may be the perfect option for you.

But, what is MIM, you ask? It's a museum that showcases music and instruments from around the world. Not only does the beautiful building house an incredible collection of instruments from many different countries and eras, the museum offers workshops, lectures, films and concerts as well. They also host museum encounters in which artist-teachers perform and interact with guests for 30 minutes. The encounters cost nothing beyond the admission fee. A quick zoom around MIM's website reveals a lot of fun opportunities to learn about music - including free instructor lesson plans.

Since both dads in our parties are guitarists(aka - rock stars!), we started in the guitar room. I think my husband might be happy to live there! The guys talked tech about the different instruments - bridges and frets and resonance while we girls picked the guitars we thought were the prettiest. My four-year-old found a guitar made by Daisy, which is the same company that made her little electric heart guitar. So fun!

MIM presents information using the best of tactile and technical mediums. I loved that the instruments are displayed in a manner that allowed us to be only a few feet away from them. This made it so easy to really look at the instruments. The room we visited (besides guitars) presented the instruments and music of different countries. And, the MIM's headphones provide access to the sounds and styles of music from each country displayed on video screens near each exhibit. It was truly a dizzying array of instruments and an incredible amount of information.

Cool beaded instrument.

This history lover wanted to stand in front of each display and read every word and study every instrument in depth. Unfortunately for me, my two-year-old had other ideas!! She wanted to jump onto the displays and use them for a "stage" - which was easy since the barriers were more decorative than practical. You can imagine that I spent more time running after her than I did reading.

After about ten minutes of futilely attempting to corral two two-year-olds and enjoy reading the signs, we gave up and went to the MIM Experience Room. The Experience Room is filled with lots of instruments that the kids (big ones too!) can use to fulfill their fantasies of playing the instruments! Both of our girls and our friends' daughter had a blast running around playing all kinds of instruments from guitars to drums, percussion instruments to a gigantic gong (which you're only allowed to hit once!). They also had a blast dancing in some of the other areas of the museum where we could listen to different kinds of music.

Overall, the MIM gets a big thumbs up from me. For the admission price, the MIM is a great deal. The building is beautiful and the collection of instruments is truly incredible. I plan to go back without my two-year-old so I can indulge my desire to read every placard and listen to every recording and really soak in the experience. But, even with a small friend along, it was fun and my girls thought it was amazing. Best of all, mamas, it was air-conditioned and kids under five get in free!

Local Last Minute Fun For This Weekend - Feb 12, 2011

This was a long week for us. My girls were sick at the beginning and I've spent the last few days cleaning up from the fallout of not doing any housework during sick people time. It seems like laundry and dirt explodes when my family is sick! Then, today - as I was working on my already - last - minute - links, my still recovering two year old asked, "Mommy will you hold me while I sleep?" What do you think I said?

Since I know some of you had a similar week but will be ready to get out in the fresh air this weekend, I couldn't let the Valentine weekend pass without listing a few fun things/places to see. Keep it local! You'll be surprised how much fun it is.

Chakra 4 Herb and Tea House Chocolate Festival - Feb 12 from 11:00am - 6:00pm
Several of you are familiar with one of my favorite shops in town. We visit Chakra 4 for many of our herbal needs - to stay healthy. But, they also have a great little cafe and hold fun events like this one for Valentine's Day. If you haven't had their chocolate, you are really missing out! For more info on Chakra 4, visit their Facebook page: Chakra 4

Central Phoenix Seed Swap Feb 12th from 1 to 3 PM
Downtown Phoenix Public Market - inside the store by the front windows, 721 North Central Ave, Phoenix
For those of you interested in gardening, this is a great opportunity. Get seeds for free!! Even if you don't have seeds to share, you're invited to participate in this event.

Cibo Pizzeria - Regular hours on website
603 N. 5th Avenue Tel. 602-441-2697
Located in a charming downtown bungalow, Cibo serves deee-licious artisan pizzas, great salads and antipasto. I especially love that their crusts are not so bread-y they take away from the flavors on top. I've had several of their pizzas and have never been disappointed. And, I have to be honest. At this point in my life, I'm not so into the ultra dark spaces that are usually considered "romantic". Usually, for my husband and I - that's a recipe for falling asleep by dessert. This space has a nice ambience but enough energy and movement going on that you'll stay awake through dinner and maybe even make it through dessert! Their patio is lovely in a garden-like atmosphere usually sports outdoor heaters in cooler weather. If you're looking for reasonable prices, a casual atmosphere and delicious food to celebrate your love this weekend, Cibo's is a great pick.

Central Slope - This weekend!
8801 N. Central Ave (Central just south of Dunlap)
Since I'm on a roll with businesses beginning with C, here's another. Central Slope is a great, locally owned business that features locally made green goods. This is right up my alley. It's a wonderful place to find a locally made present for your loved one this weekend and features items for the home (think design) or the body - local jewelry or body care by Zaaina Skincare. Zaaina is offering a buy 1, get one 50% off this weekend. Also, if you spend $30 or more at Central Slope this weekend, you'll get a handmade designer jewelry set.

The Garage by Ivy / Juju's Tutu's and Invu Photography Valentine's Day Grand Opening
February 12 · 10:00am - 5:00pm
5202 N 7th Street
This weekend, visit the grand opening of the above shops' location. These are some seriously talented people! Here, you can find artistically designed floral arrangements (check out their website gallery!), incredibly cute girly tutus and a photographer to document the occasion (you need an appointment but you can always check them out first!), this is a great one-stop-shop. I happen to know one of the amazing women who run this shop - and can say you're also supporting at least one local mom.

All these businesses are locally owned AND feature items made by other local artists or business owners. Remember that when you spend money at a locally owned business rather than a big box store or chain restaurant, more of that money goes back into improving the health of Arizona's economy. If you can't make it this weekend - support them in the next few months!!

Besides, these are all great businesses and offer high quality food or services. Go out and meet your neighbors. It's going to be a beautiful weekend!

Hissyfits Hullabaloo 2010 Review, part 2

Day two of the Hissyfits Hullabaloo review. Just a reminder - these are the recovered pics from a dying camera. Please offer the camera (photographer and pics) the respect due and offer a moment of silence rather than complaints about quality. I was just glad it stayed on long enough to take these.

You've probably noticed by now that a lot of these business owners are moms who, like many of us, are looking for ways to contribute to their families' financial welfare. From what I could see at the Hullabaloo, they all offered high quality, creative and useful items. Why not consider foregoing the big box stores for a least a few of your holiday gifts this year and spending your money with one of these businesses? You'll probably get a higher quality item for the money and one that's indubitably more hip. Most of all, your buying local contributes directly to Arizona's financial success and helps someone just like you provide for his or her family.

***By the way - A Shout-out to Hissyfits!***
I would be completely remiss in my review of the Hissyfits Hullabaloo if I did not acknowledge Hissyfits owner, Nikki, for her amazing initiative in planning this event and hosting it so perfectly. I'm so impressed with Nikki. First, for the way she runs her shop. It has a great vibe & she only takes in good quality clothes to re-sell. Secondly, she supports local moms/artists by carrying their items at the store. If you haven't been by Hissyfits resale shop on 7th Street just north of Glendale in Phoenix, it's time to stop by and find a great deal!! Also, you can find Hissyfits on Facebook to get the latest news about great deals and the kinds of items they're looking to sell.

Flowergirl - Tammy R. Mendoza, 602-617-9226
I fell in love with the work of our next artist, Tammy Mendez. Tammy got her start making simple flower hair barettes for her own daughters. As she kept making them, the designs became more elaborate. The pieces she creates for Flowergirl are anything but plain. Her romantic pieces bloom with beautiful flowers and glimmer with "jewels" and other lovely embellishments, some of which have a vintage feel.

Tammy's headbands and barettes make the perfect accessory to nearly any outfit. And, don't think these hair adornments are just for little girls. They're elegant enough to look appropriate on an adult as well. Who among us grown up girls doesn't need a little shimmer now and then? Now if I could only get my little girls to keep them in their hair!

Tammy's table was crowded with people who wanted to get one of the gorgeous pieces - so I could only get one decent shot. Don't worry. Just call her if you want a chance to own one of these.

Hustle Mama - hustlemama.etsy.com (currently at blueberrykisses.etsy.com)
Shannon Woodruff's business, Hustle Mama, offers a variety of items from barettes, to cute handmade purses (or diaper bags) to re-usable sandwhich bags. You can choose from a variety of fabrics and her workmanship is professional. This girl is a seriously crafty woman. You all know that this is not my gift! (see my last attempt at handmade art here). So, I would be really jealous of her if she hadn't been so sweet.

Being an organic mama, I especially like the re-useable food bags. They're great for the following reasons:
1. They reduce plastic waste. Ziplock baggies may be convenient but they're hard on the environment.
2. They're probably safer for eating because they're not really edible, unlike plastic zip bags. I learned this today when I found Destructo Girl gnawing on a ziplock a friend had given to her (containing treats), toddlers will try to eat anything when bored.
3. They're economical because once you buy them, you can use them over and over. See? Money saved!

If you're interested in any of Ms. Woodruff's pieces, check her out on Etsy. While her card says to visit the hustlemama site, most of her work is actually over on blueberrykisses.etsy.com

Heaven's Closet - www.heavenscloset.net
Cindy Wheat is the gifted seamstress behind Heaven's Closet. She creates unique and custom ensembles intended to make every little girl feel like a princess. She definitely succeeds. There is no doubt that this mama's clothes are made with lots of love as well as skill. Her designs are sweet and whimsical and her model - daughter Heaven - wears them well.

Cindy offers different themed designs like Thanksgiving, Christmas and Stars and Stripes.  If you need something special for you little princess, Heaven's Closet is a good place to look!

Cindy Wheat from Heaven's Closet

Precious Baby Boutique caught my eye because they sell a very popular kind of baby toy that usually comes in plastic. You know those stackable baby rings? Some babies just love those but I've never really liked the fact that so many of them are made of plastic, which is not the best thing for babies to suck on (but they do) - and it's not a great choice for our environment. Sarah Hoel of Precious Baby makes her stacking rings of fun colored fabrics. They are so bright and cheerful, any baby would love playing with them.

I also clicked over to Precious Baby's Etsy site and discovered Sarah also offers some cute decorated onesies. My favorite is a pink one with a guitar and there are some other fun ones with ties. Perfect little presents for the next baby shower!

Precious Baby Boutique

Nikki of Lemonberry Kiss is another of those accessory mavens. Her hair ornaments are particularly unique; unusual items like zippers and peacock feathers set them apart. In this case, picture speak louder than words.

She also creates these cool barettes with fun vintage pics of glam stars like Marilyn Monroe and Elvis.

I'd let these butterflies rest in my hair.

Flipped Bird – flippedbird.com

I can’t confirm or deny the origin of the name of this vendor and it’s possible association with the gesture commonly referred to as a Flipped Bird. Ok, I actually can, but you’ll have to read their website to find out if your guess is right. I will tell you that owner Marci McDonald’s husband calls her “bird” – so that’s part of where the name started. You'll have to figure out the rest yourself. However, let’s move on to her product.

Marci sent a friend to represent her because she had multiple local events to attend the day of the Hullabaloo. Once you see her bags and hats, you’ll understand why. Her handmade bags come in fabulous colors and patterns and are designed to flip inside out so you can wear them in the reverse! These cloth bags are so cool, they’ve been sighted near such famed teen sensations as – Justin Bieber. Haha!

Sadly, by the time I got to Marci’s bags, my camera had died completely, so I reverted to my cell phone – which does NOT take good quality pics. Be sure to check out her websites for the best representation of her work. By the way, the friend Marci sent to represent her bags was super friendly and not a Phoenix native. However, she survived the summer and is excited about the local feel she’s finding here. Yay, Phoenix!!

Here's one of the Flipped Bird bags with it's reverse side...

Ok, I realize that some of you might be on girly-girl overload right now, especially if you're not into pink/frills/sparkly stuff or dessert-shaped soaps. So, in your honor, let's take a break from it all and talk about something much simpler. Like T-shirts. Yes. T-shirts. But these are special T-shirts!

The people who created Holy Pinata are seriously into loving Phoenix and patronizing local business (which you know I can support!). This local business inspires it's fellow "believers in Phoenix" to show the love by - well - wearing a tshirt to prove it. The shirts are all 100% combed cotton by American Apparel and sport themes like "I cactus PHX" or "I pinetree Flag". They come in all sizes - baby to adult - so you and your baby can match.

A visit to Holy Pinata's facebook page is also good for a laugh because they post pics of sightings of the holy pinata (their red, paper-mache mascot) visiting locations all over Arizona. Best of all, $2 from the proceeds of each sale can be designated toward a local charity.

Holy Pinata's T-shirts

In case you're wondering...NO, these businesses did not pay me to write a review about them. I only write positive reviews for businesses I really think are cool. And, these were not the only businesses I loved at the Hullabaloo. Over 80 vendors were scheduled to attend this event so there is truly no way I could review them all! If I missed you or I met you and didn't review you, it's because my epic camera FAIL ruined the pic. I'll catch you at the next local event!! For those of you who'd like to see more of the great businesses who attended Hissyfits Hullabaloo, check out Hissyfits Facebook page.

Hissyfits Hullabaloo Review

I attended the Hissyfits Hullabalo a week ago Sunday and have been trying to finish my post about it all week. Unfortunately, I had major camera issues - again - proving that it's time for a new camera. My camera tanked and then I couldn't even get the pics off the SD card for several days. Grrrr....Well, thanks to my sweet husband, I got a few off the disk.

So, here are the pics I took of the great things available to buy at the Hullabaloo. Best of all, if you missed it, you can still get in touch with these awesome local artisans! As with the Sunnyslope Art Fair, I'll split my finds into two different posts. There were so many awesome local businesses there - I could possibly cover them all so here is a small sampling.

Lululand Designs - www.lululanddesigns.com or Lululand on Facebook
Being a mom of girls, I was immediately drawn to the bright colors and frilliness available at the Lululand Table. These are just so cute - and they come in all different colors. If you have a little princess who needs a tutu, this is a great place to get one. They even have colors for you ASU alumni!
Andrea Blanchard creates these awesome puffs of fluff.

Daily Scrubs - Email: jillysmith@msn.com
For those of you who are getting nervous about the gi-normous amount of sweets that will soon be staring you in the face this holiday season, I have a solution for you!!! Next time you're craving something sweet, instead of reaching for an edible treat, make some time for yourself and take a bath.

The creator of this business has a solution for those who would love a giant ice cream sandwich, sugar cookie, cinnamon roll or cupcake but don't actually want to use up two days of calories on one food item. She makes these delightful delicacies out of soap! These soaps look exactly like their intended sugary treat and smell like them too. They would make great stocking stuffers!!

Frilly Butts - www.frillybutts.etsy.com
Are you a hip mama disillusioned by the boring-ness of typical baby onesies? Never fear! I've found the answer to your problem. Frilly Butts. For real. And, as their name implies, their motto is, "Business in the front, party in the back" (just like a mullet). Holly Trueblood's creations feature cool designs and - for girls - frilly booties.

Also, if you're having a hard time getting your toddler interested in potty training, Holly can hook you up with some pretty cute little training pants.

You can see more of Holly's great art on her Frilly Butts Etsy page. Frilly Butts! Frilly Butts! (Sorry, I think my four year old is rubbing off on me. I can't stop saying their name!) Seriously, check out their page. She even has a sale section!! Woohoo!!

Sew Cute in AZ - www.sewcuteinaz.etsy.com
Sew Cute in AZ solves the problem of ugly car seat covers. Her car seat covers are just darling and she offers several different fabric offerings, including one with guitars - which you know would go over big at our house! Not only were the fabrics and designs super cute, the quality of her work seemed really high as well. If you're looking for an extra car seat cover or boppy cover, this is the place to look.

Here are a few pics of her work.

That's all for today folks. Tune in tomorrow to see some more fabulous local artists!!

As usual, show these local businesses some love by sharing this post on Twitter, Facebook or your own blog. YOU can make a difference in our economy by shopping local!!

Why Buy Local? And - What's Going on in Phoenix This Weekend!

I love buying local. You probably already know this because I talk about it in this blog all the time. If you talk to me in person, you might have to ask me to change the subject because I'll definitely go on and on about the great businesses we have here in Phoenix. But why is this so important to me? I'm SO glad you asked.  Obviously, I have a lot to say on this subject.

I grew up here in Phoenix. And, while the beaches of Cali and the rainy ways of Colorado or Oregon call to me for vacation, I really just love the Valley of the Sun. The huge expanse of blue sky filled with puffy white clouds, the hiking trails, the sunsets, the great weather (Come on! It's incredible 9 months out of the year!) and the casual lifestyle all fit me perfectly. In addition, I have roots here and have friends from all over Arizona and thanks to Facebook, I get to see how they intersect with each other in the most amazing ways. I love staying in touch with all of them and knowing they're still here, making a life for themselves and their families in my hometown.

There are a lot of reasons I could site for my choice to buy local, from environment to quality to economy.

First, I get to meet new people and learn about their lives/history/goals/dreams all the time (which I LOVE!)

Second, I know that what I buy is usually going to be better quality because that business will only see me again and get my vote of confidence if what I've purchased works and lasts.

Third, I genuinely love the creative talents exhibited everywhere in Phoenix. I hate when people say Phoenix has no culture. It's just not true. There are so many amazingly gifted artists, performers, boutique owners, chefs and various business owners in Phoenix, I'll literally NEVER be able to list them all. For the most part, if you can dream it, you can probably buy it here.

Fourth, I am financially supporting my neighbors (and myself) when I spend my money at a local business. Spending local makes a HUGE difference in how much money stays in the local economy. According to Local First, $73 of every $100 spent locally stays in our community - in wages, taxes, local business services etc. Spending that same $100 at a non-locally owned business will only put $43 back into our community. My little contribution makes a huge difference to my neighbors! For more about how our individual purchases can help our own community, check out ShiftArizona, Shift the Way You Shop.

My biggest reason is Community. Buying local connects me to my neighbors in an amazing way.

Are you tired of hearing about local business yet? I hope not because I'm getting ready to post a lot more about it.

Here are a few exciting things going on in Phoenix this weekend!

Local First Fall Festival -
Local First Arizona is a non-profit organization focused on strengthening local economy by supporting, promoting and celebrating local businesses. Tomorrow Local First is hosting a local fall fest featuring free food, live music, fun stuff for kids, shopping and lots of local businesses. The fun starts at 10 and lasts till 3 pm at Duck and Decanter - 16th Street and Camelback.

Chow Bella & Roosevelt Row's Pie Social
Now this sounds like something right up my alley! Entry fee is $10 or two homemade pies. Event is in the Roosevelt Row Arts District and lasts from 2-6 pm. Proceeds benefit Kenilworth Elementary Schools after school programs. Good will and good pie - all in one event. Yum.

Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts 2010
In this event - YOU are the art at a parade supporting the "arts and culture that are a vital part of Downtown" Phoenix. Be part of supporting the downtown community and dress up, ride a bike, make a little float. Whatever. Meet some new people and have fun with your kids. This event will be right next to the pie social - so eat some pie and then walk in the parade! Even Mayor Phil Gordon is supposed to be at this event. I wonder if he'll wear a costume?

As usual, support local events and businesses by posting this on Facebook or Twitter and feel free to send me information about upcoming local events. I'll do my best to post them.

Here are a few events to consider - and, admission is FREE.

Hissyfits Hullabaloo is a fabulous, fun craft fair at a great local kids resale store - Hissyfits. Thanks to Hissyfits' hip mama owner, Nikki, the store is known for providing Phoenix's coolest kids with feisty, affordable style. I expect no less from their outdoor vendor show. Hissyfits has been posting previews of their vendors - and the talents represented there will range from handmade items to photographers to teas. Among the 84 vendors attending are - Fleur De Tea, Forever Photography by Valisa, Cakegirl, Purdy Things, Dolce Vita Mia, Unravel Me, Night Owl, and Finley and Me.   For more info, check out their link and then just come! Hissyfits Hullabaloo - this Sunday from 10 am - 3 pm.

in great condition at this great little spot - you can consign yours too!
Located on the west side of 7th Street just north of Glendale.
I'll be at this one!

The 6th Annual Believe - A Holiday Boutique looks like a lot of fun. Two great local business owners I know personally will be at this Chandler hosted event - Zaaina Skincare and Blings Unlimited. You can reach both of these businesses through Facebook or click on their names to go straight to their sites. Although you can always find them online, there's nothing like spending a day meeting new people and checking out some great local businesses!

If you want to go Downtown - ASU 411 Gallery Exhibition

The ASU 411 Gallery Exhibition includes over 100 new, diverse pieces from community and student artists. The Fall 2010 exhibition artwork focuses on pressing social issues related to Social Justice and Human Rights.  Peer Allies Youth Leader Mannyy Aguirre will have three pieces from his series, Lady Parts,
on view in this exhibition!
The event is part of Artlink’s First Fridays, and a shuttle stop will be located at AE England Building/Civic Space Park. The Gallery 411 Exhibition is presented in partnership with the Civic Space Park Collaboration’s First Friday Event, where live music and interactive art will take place.
The exhibit will be open from 6-8 p.m. Friday, November 5 at the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus - University Center, 411 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix.

Get out and meet your neighbors this weekend!!

Support these local events by sharing this link via FB or Twitter. And, if you know of any great upcoming events, send them my way.

The Baker's Daughter - Grand Opening

We had the best time this weekend at the opening of The Baker's Daughter!! Most of you saw my review of The Baker's Daughter last week. If you didn't, check it out here...

If you didn't make it to her grand opening celebration this weekend, here are a few pictures of the festivities. We ate free brats (and they were the good kind!), sauerkraut and dessert and visited with new friends. Of course, the camera I was using had technical issues that night. Thank goodness my husband had his phone!

Stefanie passing out the amazing brats

Some Halloween fun

And CHOCOLATE, of course!
 People enjoying their neighbors

 More chocolate. Shimmering, glimmering chocolate...

A friend who gave me some good advice on homemade sauerkraut.
Me with Christine - we were trying to get the chocolate
in the background of our self portrait. Hahaha!

Fall petit fours

People filtered in and out during the hour that we were there and it was packed the whole time. The Baker's Daughter & Karl's Bakery are both places where you're likely to experience a wonderful smattering of different cultures as you hear English, French, German and Spanish spoken - all in one visit. And their customers all have favorites for which they come - the apple dumplings, Challah, petit fours, linzer cookies, pumpkin donuts and of course, the chocolate. Everything is made fresh daily with high quality ingredients.

But the people who visit year after year really come because when they walk into the stores, they know that the Boerner family - who own both shops - will remember who they are and welcome them with genuine friendship. You really can't ask for more in a local shop. If you didn't stop by this weekend, check them out in the next few months and try their holiday treats. They are located on 7th Street and Dunlap. Organic Mama visits The Baker's Daughter (think CHOCOLATE!)

I've been wanting to do a vlog (video log for the uninitiated!) for a while and today I'm posting my first one. Yay!

Hope you enjoy. Please post your comments after the video! :)

The Grand Opening of The Baker's Daughter is Saturday, October 30, 2010 on the Southeast corner of 7th Avenue and Dunlap. If the lot is full, you should be able to park at the lot cat-corner - on the northwest corner.

See you there!!!

Finding Culture in Phoenix, the Sunnyslope Art Walk, part 2

After a brief commercial interlude that included some bean cooking and hummus making, we are back to the remaining artists I met this weekend at the Sunnyslope Art Walk. If you missed part one - you can click here to read it.

Strangely enough, while both my husband and I are musicians, we didn't really get the 411 on all the bands that were playing there - mainly because they were playing (not talking). But there was a wide variety of music from artists like Full Moon Jazz, Desert Gumbo, The Beaded Lizards, T-Bone Daily and many more. Now back to THE LIST...

I must begin by apologizing to Madison Hallock because I promised to go in alphabetical order, thus proving my impartiality to the artists introduced. Alas, unbeknownst to me, my nearly-two year old rearranged my notes as I was distracted by my day job (mothering) and dear Madison moved to part two. Of course, now she's received even more blog space than she would have before, so it's better for her. Wait. Madison, did you bribe my daughter with yogurt balls or something?

As usual, I digress...

And now...Drumroll please!

Artist No. 5 - Madison Hallock of merMadison.

This was the first thing that caught my eye when we reached the art walk because it's truly unusual.
a merMadison gourd
If you're thinking, "Hmmm, that kinda looks like a pumpkin."  Well, you'd almost be right. It is a gourd, which is related to the pumpkin but has a lot harder shell. If you shake it, you'll actually hear seeds inside rattle. Madison dries the gourds, then carves and burns these intricate designs all over them. I was simply taken by their shape and beauty. Of course, at my house, they'd probably briefly become a musical instrument. Right before being smacked on the ground to remove the seeds. by crazy-little-people.
Here's another pic of her work.

In the background, you can see there's a gourd decorated with intricate feather designs. It's amazing that anyone could draw something this detailed on paper, let alone convey their vision to a round object. Madison has a few more incredible looking creations like her apple and cameo gourds and the Koi designs. You can find them on Etsy or become a Facebook fan. There, Madison. Hope I made up for the alphabetical error.

And - on to -

Artist No. 6 - Cathy Manthey of Sophia Maria Designs
These little bits of fabric and color just filled the girlie side of me with joy. Yes. Apparently, I do have a girlie side hidden behind the hiking boots, books filled with big words and gardening gloves. This might explain my recent penchant for pink. Which is fully. Indulged. Here. Check out these DARLING designs.
Cathy Manthey with some of her Aprons
(Ok - I have to just insert here that I'm currently using a veeerrrryyyy old
*and crappy*
digital camera that just doesn't do justice to Cathy's lovely aprons. )

Regardless... Girls - you know how standing in the kitchen, cooking your life away can just be soooo exhausting, especially when you've been going all day and your feet feel like they simply won't hold you another minute? I'm totally convinced that wearing one of Cathy's aprons would immediately lighten the load.

Rob - are you listening? Honey?

And, that's not all. Sophia Marie Designs doesn't just do aprons, they have the most adorable little magnets you've ever seen - with a vintage look. Anyone need some FLAIR?

Would these be perfect to attach the shopping list or the kid-created art to the fridge or what?!

So, get started on your Christmas shopping early (really, Robert...), and contact Cathy Manthy through her Facebook page or email her at smdesigns@cox.net

Moving on...
Artist No. 7 - Barbara Redmond, mixed media artist
Barbara Redmond
Some of you will remember from part one of this post, my venture into felt - AHEM - art. After viewing that exercise in futility, it will come as no surprise I hold Barbara's work rather in awe. My first glimpse into the world of felting came several years back while my college vocal ensemble was traveling through the British Isles and we ventured into a street market in Ireland, where vendors were selling gorgeous felted wool purses and scarves. I couldn't believe that wool could be so beautiful or so soft and when I saw they were priced at nearly 100 EUR, I knew I couldn't afford them either. Thankfully, while Barbara's scarves don't come close to the same cost as those of the Irish, they certainly are just as beautiful.

You may be wondering why in the world a girl in AZ would want a wool scarf. Well, these are not your grandmother's scarves. They are lightweight, delicate and filled with nuanced textures and colors. Perfect for a cool, Phoenix night out in "fall" - when you need a touch of color that won't roast you alive. These would be especially great for my vocalist friends who are always wrapping things around their necks  - even in our mild winters. Here is a post from Barb's blog on how she makes her scarves. You can reach her there or through her Etsy page.

Artist No. 8 - Katie at Flights of Fancy
You can actually see the work of our next artist in Barbara's picture above - because they shared a booth. Katie is Barb's daughter and talent must run in the family. She's a bubbly lady with a great smile who clearly has her hands full.
Katie and her blue eyed boy
Yet, somehow she still finds time to create these incredible wind chimes out of items that most of us would consider junk. The way she combines the shapes and colors turns them into something beautiful. Here's a closer look.
Yes, people. That is an old metal pitcher.
I love this thing and it's now on my wish list. (Rob, are you writing this down?)

For your very own conversation piece created by Katie at Flights of Fancy, contact her at kt61180@yahoo.com

This concludes the list of artists I met at the Sunnyslope Art Walk - though there were many more worth mentioning. After all, people, we had our four and (nearly) two year-olds in tow. And even being the
über cultured girls they are, while chomping yummy Baker's Daughter chocolate and sitting in their comfy stroller - they were soon ready for new sights. So, feeling duly cosmopolitan-ized, we strode past the rest of the attractions and headed for home.

Did any of you go to the art walk? I love hearing from you! Leave me a comment. :)

Finding Culture in Phoenix, the Sunnyslope Art Walk, part 1

We all have been given gifts in life. I have been blessed with my share - for which I am truly grateful. But as those of you who know me would doubtless agree, none of those talents are in any way related to handmade art or even simple crafts. My mother was and my four sisters are, actually quite incredible in this area. Somehow, the art gene (non-singing one) skipped me. BooHoo. Here's the last attempt I made at doing something handmade with my 4 year old. According to the websites I visited, like this one, a very simple project (what-EVER Martha Stewart!). Here's how ours turned out...
It was supposed to be a beautiful little ball of felt. Ours looked like
animal intestines.

It should come as no surprise that I distinctly prefer enjoying the art of others, rather than slogging through a project whose result I'm bound to detest in the end anyway. This weekend, I did just that! My family and I got a little exercise and culture enjoying the Sunnyslope Art Walk and we had a wonderful time seeing the work of people who definitely have the art gene.

Since I met too many to introduce in a day, this will be a "to be continued" post. I have no financial connection to these artists - they're just people whose stuff I enjoyed! ***Also, for those of you who are new to blogging and links, you can contact these artists by clicking the underlined titles of their businesses or the underlined items they create. Help contribute to the local economy and spend your money locally!***

So here, without further ado, is the art of some people who are incredibly gifted!  Let me introduce - (alphabetically, no favoritism).

Artist No. 1 - Christine Boerner - Genius creator of Chocolate Art, A.K.A. The Baker's Daughter
Christine Boerner, The Baker's Daughter

Christine grew up under the tutelage of her parents, Karl and Stefanie Boerner, owners of Karl's bakery. Then she spent several years in Europe becoming a master of her craft. Chocolate lovers everywhere know that good chocolate is, in itself, a work of art. Not only is Christine's art edible, she uses only the finest quality ingredients to make it. For those of you who are not lovers of chocolate (read: CRAZY people), you can still see the beauty of her work below. She was also recently featured on Channel 10. Currently, you can find her chocolate at Karl's bakery on 7th Street and Dunlap and she'll be celebrating the opening of her own store - next door - on October 30.
Ummmm... chocolate

Artist No. 2 -Kate Rowan Carey, owner of A Blissful Life. In her own words, "purveyor of lovely little treasures for your home and body". And her creations, which range from darling little cloth flower barrettes to trivets to (my favorite) cloth coffee cuffs, are perfect for adding a bright spot of color to your home. One of the best things about Kate's work is that it is sustainable in the sense that it is reusable. Having a party and need decoration? Check out one of her cloth banners. Does your daughter (granddaughter?) love playing princess? Do your part to save the planet and buy one of these little cloth crowns instead of the plastic ones.

Ms. Kate Rowan Carey, owner of A Blissful Life

Artist No. 3 - Purvi Desai, the beauty behind Zaaina Skincare, found at Central Slope, herbal infusions and reclaimed studio
Purvi Desai with her own line, Zaaina Skincare
Ms. Desai spent 10 years utilizing her finance degree by working for Fortune 500 companies before taking a decidedly different path. Zaaina Skincare makes products specifically balanced for different skin types, free of nasty stuff like parabens, artificial fragrances, dyes or chemical preservatives. In fact, Zaaina products are made from my favorite things - herbs. Purvi uses essential oils like tea tree and lavender to preserve the products safely and naturally. This also means they smell amazing. The product ingredients are available both on the packages and on the website and there's not a weird chemical among them. Check out the label on the skincare you're using and consider a switch to something natural (and locally made!).

Zaaina carries products for men, women and babies. You can visit them on their website www.zaaina.com or become a fan on their facebook page under Zaaina Skincare. You can also find out more about Central Slope at their website or by becoming a fan on their Facebook page.

Artist No. 4 - Robert Lievens of Fallen Wood Turnings
Mr. Lievens does exactly what his business name suggests - finds fallen wood and turns it into works of art. He's become so known for his work that people often bring wood to him from locales around the nation. We used to frequent the Downtown Phoenix Public Market instead of the Roadrunner Park Farmer's Market, and Robert would often be there. So fascinated was I by his knack for highlighting the most beautiful aspects of the wood he uses,  I would stand and stare at the incredible things he'd crafted out of trees lost to our crazy Arizona storms.

When my younger sister bought her first house, I knew I wanted my gift to her to be something of beauty. I chose a sun catcher created from wood and pink agate from Robert's collection. He is also a knowledgeable and friendly person and spent some time showing me some of his photography (multi-talented guy!) on a camera he recommended to me. (As you can tell, I'm in the market for one!)
Mr. Robert Lieven and one of his windchimes
Robert Lieven's work includes jewelry, bowls, ornaments, bells and windcatchers. If you are interested in adding a beautiful, touchable piece of art for your home or garden, this is the place to get it.

Stay tuned for more artists tomorrow!
